These traditional German waffles (Waffeln) are my all-time favourite. Not too sweet, easy to whip up and just so satisfying to eat! This recipe was one of the only ones passed down from my Oma to my dad, who would often make them for breakfast when it was just the two of us.
Please make them and eat them greedily with lots of powdered sugar and salted butter.
Makes: 5 waffles (I will usually make a double batch and then freeze leftovers to reheat for a quick breakfast later on.)
Ingredients:
100g unsalted butter, very very soft
75g granulated sugar
2 eggs, room temp
½ Tbsp vanilla extract
200g all-purpose flour
½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
236ml milk or water (I prefer milk but use what you have!)
Powdered sugar, for serving
Salted butter, for serving
Instructions:
In a large bowl of a stand mixer (or with a hand mixer), beat butter and sugar together.
Mix in the eggs, one a time, until well combined. Then add the vanilla extract.
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder and salt. Beat the dry ingredients into the wet.
Once everything is well incorporated, gradually start to beat in the milk (or water). You want the batter to be pourable but not too runny.
Heat up your waffle iron. Once heated, ladle ⅓ - ½ cup of the batter onto your iron and use the back of the ladle to spread it out a little. This helps the waffle shape up properly. Cook for about 3 minutes until golden brown.
Repeat with the remaining batter.
Serve hot with a dusting of powdered sugar and pats of salted butter.
